The Family Fun Fest wrapped up its 30th anniversary on July 11, and the drone show over City Hall is the image most people will carry into August. That is the postcard version of an Andover summer. It is also the least useful one, because it happens twice out of roughly 90 warm-weather days.
What defines the other 88 days is a two-mile stretch of Bunker Lake Boulevard NW. If you already live here, you have probably driven it a hundred times this year without noticing that four of the most-used summer institutions in the northwest metro sit inside that corridor. The thesis of this post is simple: Andover's summer identity is not the marquee weekend, it is the density of what a resident can do on any ordinary Saturday between the farmers market lot and the water park gate.
The Bunker Lake Boulevard Saturday
Start at 3210 Bunker Lake Blvd NW. That is Riverdale Church's parking lot, where the Andover Farmers Market runs Saturdays and accepts EBT, cash, card, and market bucks. This is the market's 20th season. It runs every Saturday from June 20 through October 17, 9 AM to 1 PM, which means as of publication you have roughly 13 Saturdays left before the season closes. Not many. Worth counting.
Drive west on Bunker Lake Boulevard for about six minutes and you are at 550 Bunker Lake Blvd NW, the main entrance to Bunker Hills Regional Park. The 1,600-acre park covers swimming and water slides at Bunker Beach, horseback riding at Bunker Park Stables, playground, biking, hiking, golf, camping, archery, picnicking, and the Anoka County Veteran's Memorial. A daily vehicle permit is $7, or $30 for an annual pass that is honored across the Anoka, Washington, and Carver county park systems. The annual pass pays for itself on visit five.
That is the whole Saturday, and it happens inside three ZIP-code-adjacent addresses.
Why the Market Anchors Everything
The temptation with a farmers market post is to talk about tomatoes. Skip that. The interesting fact about the Andover Farmers Market is not what is on the tables, it is where it sits geographically. Riverdale Church is a five-minute drive from the Bunker Beach parking lot, which means the market is functionally the pre-game for the park. You buy peaches and a coffee at 10 AM, you are in the wave pool by 11:15.
Located at 3210 Bunker Lake Blvd NW, the market features a range of vendors from fruits and vegetables to artisan goods, with reviewers highlighting the quality of fresh produce and product variety including hard-to-find items like purple potatoes. That last detail matters more than it sounds. Purple potatoes are a signal that this is a producer-driven market, not a resale operation. When Andover residents say they "shop the market," they mean they organize a portion of their weekly grocery around it. That habit does not exist in every north-metro suburb.

Total out-of-pocket for a family of four doing everything but the water park and stables is under $40. That is the number worth remembering, because it is the number the portals cannot tell you.
The Park Nobody Fully Uses
Most Andover households use maybe 20 percent of Bunker Hills. They use the beach in July, the playground on random weekends, the trails in October. The rest of the park sits underused by residents and gets absorbed by out-of-town visitors instead. A short inventory of what is actually there:
- More than 20 miles of scenic paved trail for hiking and biking, plus 3.5 miles of unpaved trail for hiking only
- A 6.5-acre off-leash dog park, with leashed dogs allowed on trails
- A free 9-hole disc golf course near the picnic and playground area
- An outdoor archery range with several range types at $5 per person per visit
- Habitat ranging from oak savannah to prairie and wetlands, where visitors may spot woodcock, eastern whip-poor-will, or eastern hognose snakes
- Bunker Beach Water Park with a wave pool, lazy river, and waterslides
The trail number is the one to sit with. Twenty miles of paved trail inside city limits is not a normal suburban amenity. For context, a resident who bikes three miles from home to a trail head, does a 10-mile loop, and heads back has used a nontrivial share of an afternoon and has not driven anywhere. Andover's park system quietly rewards households that own bikes more than households that own boats.

The "largest in Minnesota" claim gets thrown around, so it is worth pinning down. Bunker Beach is the largest outdoor water park in the state, sitting inside a regional park you already pay to enter with a $30 annual pass. That combination is unusual. Valleyfair charges you separately for parking. Bunker Beach does not.
What August Actually Looks Like
The Fun Fest is done. The Concerts in the Park series and other community programs continue through August. On the calendar worth writing down:
August 3–6: A youth outdoor program running 9 AM to 4 PM at Bunker Hills and Coon Rapids Dam, $210 plus tax, teaching kayaking, archery, and fat tire biking. Registration is through Anoka County Parks.
August 14: The 3rd Annual Guns-N-Hoses Charity Golf Tournament at Majestic Oaks Golf Club, from 1:00 PM. This is the fundraiser most Andover residents drive past without noticing. Majestic Oaks itself is a 45-hole golf club, one of the larger public courses in the north metro.
Every Saturday through October 17: Farmers Market. The market runs 9 to 1 rain or shine, with 25+ vendors weekly including farms, food producers, ready-to-eat vendors, and artisans, plus children's programming and live music. If You Have Two Hours, Not Eight
Not everyone has a whole Saturday. The compressed version:
- Market at 9 for coffee, cut flowers, and one hot food item
- Twenty-minute walk on the paved trail behind the Activities Center
- Home by noon
If you did this every Saturday from now to mid-October you would have logged 13 short trail walks and spent about $91 on park permits and coffee. That is the actual texture of an Andover summer for a resident. Not the drone show. The habit.
The Point
The reason to write any of this down is that people who live in Andover routinely undersell what they have. When friends visit from Edina or St. Louis Park, the reflex is to drive them somewhere else. That reflex is wrong. A regional park with the state's largest outdoor water park, 20 miles of paved trail, a 500-acre stables operation, a farmers market in its 20th year, and a 45-hole golf course are not consolation prizes. They are the reason the housing stock along Bunker Lake Boulevard holds its value even in slower quarters.
The Fun Fest is the weekend that gets photographed. The 88 days around it are the ones that make people stay.
